The Endless Summer Legacy
Barry Rice and his wife Roz left their regular jobs in the UK to sail across the Atlantic in the late 1970s. They landed in the Caribbean and began exploring the islands and new opportunities, eventually landing in the BVI.
With their adventurous spirit and love of sailing, it wasn’t long before they became involved with the crewed yacht charter scene in the Virgin Islands.
In the early ‘80s, Barry worked on Endless Summer I, built by Irwin Yachts for charter in the Caribbean. When the owners considered a second boat, Barry worked directly with Irwin to modify and optimize the design. Endless Summer II was built, soon becoming a market leader in the growing fleet of professionally crewed charter yachts in the British and US Virgin Islands.
ESI and ESII were originally owned by the same owner from New York, USA. In 1986, after many successful seasons, Barry and Roz took over ownership of ESII and made her their own.
As competition in charter yachts grew, Barry pioneered stateroom charters, which allowed couples to rent individual cabins and enjoy the amenities of a large luxury crewed yacht. Alongside whole boat charters, the schedule quickly filled, and ESII became one of the busiest boats in the BVI.
In 1994, Heather Cobb joined ESII as an inexperienced chef. Under Captain Barry’s tutelage, she gained confidence and culinary skills and soon revamped the menu to make it her own.
In 1995, returning from racing the Sydney to Hobart race in Australia, Captain Robin Craigen joined his girlfriend Heather aboard ESII, sending Barry ashore to spend more time with Roz and their young daughter Susanna as they began building their fabulous vacation villa, Summer Heights.
Heather and Robin enjoyed four incredible years aboard ESII, taking care of numerous guests, their families and friends, earning rave reviews along the way. When they married in 1996, they began talk of raising a family together and realized charter yacht life was not the ideal family environment.
In late 1997, taking the culture of hospitality that was ingrained upon them aboard Endless Summer, they founded Moving Mountains, a luxury full-service ski chalet and vacation home management business in Steamboat Springs in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Barry and Roz continued to charter Endless Summer II until 2017 when the yacht was seriously damaged during Hurricane Irma. She was salvaged and sold to a family as a live-aboard yacht, but her chartering days were over.
Sadly, Roz lost her battle with cancer and passed away in 2018, and Barry passed a year later after suddenly falling ill during a visit to the USA. Both are sorely missed, but daughter Susanna remains close to the Craigens, who will join her to celebrate her wedding in the BVI in May 2024.
Despite their separation from the ocean, the Craigens never lost their passion for sailing. After successfully growing their business from one chalet to managing over 250 luxurious homes in four ski resorts, they visited the Annapolis Boat Show in 2022 while celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Upon visiting the Lagoon Catamarans on display, they decided to begin researching a return to yacht charters.
In 2023, they formed “Moving Oceans,” a yacht charter brokerage division of Moving Mountains, to offer a curated collection of yacht charters to the many guests who have trusted them with their ski vacations for years.
After much research and consideration, the Craigens identified the opportunity to pay homage to the origin of Moving Mountains in the BVI, bringing their own brand of hospitality back to the islands with the launch of a new boat, a luxurious charter catamaran named Endless Summer III.
At the end of 2024, they returned to the BVI as yacht owners and operators, with a professional crew to take care of the boat and its guests. ESIII began charter operations with her new crew in November 2024.
And the legend continues...
